MEDICO-PASTORAL ASSOCIATION A Centre for Mental Health Care We are a 50 year old NGO, providing half way home rehabilitation facilities, both residential and day-care for persons with mental health issues. We have currently 35residents and 6 day care residents. Residents are under the treatment of their individual Psychiatrists.

Qualifications:
Post graduate in Social Work / Psychology / related field ( 2 Year full course ) From a recognised university.
Responsibilities:
Professional staff members are responsible for the residents of the Half-Way Home and
Navajeevan Hostel assigned to them for counseling services. This involves the following:
a. Conducting the initial interview with the new residents and their families and opening a
new file for each resident after the admission procedure is completed.
All the information elicited on the day of admission must be entered in the file on the
same day.
b. Responsible for counseling Residents, assigned by the Joint Senior Counsellor, and their
families, and maintain counseling case history records [according to the standardized
proforma (Annexure A)], in accordance with the stipulated time frame.
c. Maintaining systematic records of counseling sessions, including a brief summary of
sessions, contract for charges, homework and etc.
d. Maintain records of correspondence, with copy to the Administrator, and follow-up work
with the residents and their families.
e. Be available for consultation (not counseling) of other Counselor’s Residents in the
absence of the former.
f. Hand over prescriptions for medications prescribed by the Psychiatrists / Visiting
Physician to Nurse / designated staff
g. Follow up treatment prescribed by the Psychiatrist.
h. Individual Counseling, Family and Group Psychotherapy
These therapy sessions help the residents to deal with their problems and find new and
healthy ways of facing life situations. They learn to resolve conflicts, express feelings
approximately, make decisions, learn to trust themselves and one another, and build
confidence. For Group Therapy, the residents meet in two groups with their therapists.
This is a time when each one of them can work out various issues by setting goals that
are behaviour oriented, i.e., goals that are observable, realistic and achievable. One way
in which residents are visually stimulated is by using charts with their names, on which
they move step by step, depending on their efforts to reach the goal. This is also the time
for bringing up personal issues. The group is used for support and, if necessary, to
caringly confront any behaviour that is inappropriate or irresponsible. It is also a time
when, once again, residents appreciate each other’s positive behaviour and traits.The family
therapy meetings are held to involve the family in the treatment programme
with an idea to prepare the residents for their future rehabilitation, re-socialization and
re-settlement. They are required to be conducted systematically and scientifically, at
least, once a month. The minutes of the meetings are to be recorded and presented to the
Therapy Programme Standing Committee through the Clinical Manager.
i. Initiate social, educational and recreational programmes for Residents (to be
implemented by the appropriate personnel).
j. Assist in Occupational Therapy, and be in-charge of O.T. activities in the absence of an
Occupational Therapist.
k. Assist Emergency Staff and other staff in handling difficult Residents in emergency
situation.
l. Visit Resident’s families at home / work place (in Bangalore city only) as directed by the
Clinical Manager.
m. Relief duty for Emergency Staff on their ‘OFF DAYS’ / according to the official roster.
n. In the absence of the Local Guardian, take Residents to the hospital where needed.
o. Will attend regularly all the professional meetings arranged in MPA.
p. Will assist the Clinical Manager in implementation of Mental Health programmes and
any other such programmes.
q. Will perform day / night duties, and other responsibilities assigned, as per the roster
devised by the Clinical Team. Duty roster for the month must be prepared one week
in advance by the Joint Senior Counsellor in consultation with the Clinical
Manager. The same is to be displayed on prominent boards and intimated to all the
concerned. Any changes in the roster can be effected only by the Clinical Manager
and the Administrator.
r. Will be responsible for therapeutic services to Day-care and Domiciliary Care clients and
maintain their records according to standardized proforma (Annexure)
s. Follow strictly the stipulated admission and discharge procedures.
t. Undergo training programmes for professional growth as decided by the Therapy
Programme Standing Committees / Office.
u. Attend and maintain written record in separate registers of the following meetings:
Staff meetings headed by the Clinical Team morning and evening to discuss and decide
issues concerning the Hostelites and Residents.
Residents Meeting headed by the Joint Senior Counsellor
Family Meeting headed by the Clinical Team
Training Programmes and Support groups headed by the Joint Senior Counsellor and the
Clinical Manager
Other programmes organized by MPA; and the staff will assist in conducting the same.
Conferences / Seminars / Workshops when deputed by the Joint Senior Counsellor or the
Clinical Manager / Clinical Consultant / Office
Annual General Body Meeting.

Qualifications:

Responsibilities:
The Residential Counsellor of Navajeevan has a major role as the hostelites are men coming from
the Half-Way Home after treatment and rehabilitation. They are still in the process of being
rehabilitated and returning to the community through training programmes and jobs. They need to
be supervised with professional help. The Residential Counsellor has to get help from
professional resource persons, and the professional staff employed at the MPA.
The Residential Counsellor will be responsible to the Administrator for ensuring all the facilities
in proper condition, the Clinical Manager for the professional tasks and the Treasurer for financial
matters. Specifically, he shall be responsible for:-
a. Navajeevan Hostel
i. Cleanliness of the Hostel and its surroundings
ii. Purchase of essential goods.
iii. Supervise laundry arrangements and maintain linen accounts
iv. Maintenance of Inventory Register of all items
v. Maintaining general discipline in the hostel
vi. Checking and personally administering medicines as prescribed, in the absence of Nurse
vii. Arranging for regular reviews by the concerned Consultants.
viii. Taking a hostelite to hospital, if and when necessary
ix. Keeping a check on hostelites’ movements outside the campus, including proceeding on
approved leave.
x. Supervision of meals and having meals with the hostelites
xi. Ensuring proper diet for those who are sick, as recommended
xii. Keep a check on Visitors. Visitors are not allowed into Hostel room.
b. Medicines
Will be overall in charge for indenting, inventory and dispensing supervising Nurse.
Will have to monitor the Nurse on subjection of medicine and related matter and take
remedial action on Nurse weekly off / leave etc.
c. Maintenance of Registers
i. Pocket money according to need list, and if applicable a letter of consent by the parent or
guardian, stating the amount of weekly pocket money.
ii. Register for going to work / class / leave
iii. Meetings: Arranging and calling weekly hostel meetings
Meetings: The Residential Counsellor has to attend the following:-
Staff meetings: Morning and evening to discuss and decide issues concerning the Hostelites’
Family Meeting
Training Programmes as decided
Other programmes organized by MPA.
Conferences / Seminars / Workshops when delegated
The above duties is illustrative and depending on need additional assignments may be there.
